Why proxies get banned on release day — and how to stop it happening to yours
The proxies that die on release day are usually dead before the queue opens. Bot protection does most of its judging up front, on facts about the IP itself — and by the time your first request lands, the verdict is largely in. Understanding what gets scored is the difference between a list that survives the season and one that burns in a weekend.
Check one: what kind of address is this?
Every IP belongs to an ASN — the network operator it is registered to. Datacenter operators are public knowledge, and release-day sites ban those ranges wholesale: the block lands before any behaviour is measured, which is why a fresh, never-used datacenter proxy still fails instantly. IPs registered to consumer providers pass this gate because blocking them would block real customers. Check two: what has this neighbourhood done?
Reputation is scored per subnet, not per address. If the /24 around your IP carted heavily on last week’s release, your never-used IP inherits that record — one bad neighbour taxes the whole street. This is the quiet cost of oversold proxy pools: the same ranges are resold to customer after customer, every one of them stacking history onto subnets you will be judged by. Check three: what is this session doing?
Behaviour still matters at the margins: request velocity per IP, carts per address, and — the classic self-inflicted wound — an IP change mid-checkout, which reads as session hijacking. The two habits that trip this check are running monitors and checkouts on the same list, and rotating inside a purchase flow. Keep monitor traffic on rotating residential, keep checkouts on static IPs, and never mix the two jobs on one address.
Soft bans: the failure nobody notices
Hard blocks are honest — an error page tells you where you stand. The more common release-day failure is silent degradation: suspicious IPs get slower responses, endless spinners, carts that quietly empty. Keeping a list alive: the checklist
- Consumer-registered IPs only for anything that checks out — datacenter ranges fail the ASN gate on sight.
- Dedicated allocation, so your subnets carry only your history.
- One IP per task or account — identity sharing is the cheapest signal you can avoid handing over.
- Split monitors from checkouts: rotating residential watches, static ISP buys.
- Never rotate mid-session. Sticky or static through any flow that ends in a payment.
- Swap subnets after a rough release instead of riding a cooling range into the next one.
